Meltblown: ultra-fine fibres (0.5–5 micron) from polymer melt — primary filtration medium in N95/FFP2 respirators and surgical masks (middle layer). Needle-punch: fibres mechanically entangled by barbed needles — heavy, durable, 100–2,000 GSM — used in carpets, geotextiles, automotive linings. Spunlace (hydroentangled): high-pressure water jets bond fibres — soft, absorbent — used in wet wipes, medical drapes, cosmetic pads. Thermal bond: hot-air or calendar bonding — light and soft — used in nappies/diapers, hygiene.

EN 13795 (EN 13795-1, -2, -3) specifies performance requirements for surgical gowns, drapes, and clean air suits. Key parameters: microbial penetration, liquid resistance (hydrostatic head >100 cm H₂O for standard, >140 cm for high-performance), linting, and tensile strength. Medical nonwovens typically use SMS (spunbond-meltblown-spunbond) construction. Suppliers must hold EN ISO 13485 quality management certification for medical device applications.

Geotextile nonwovens (needle-punch PP or PET) are specified by tensile strength (ISO 10319), CBR puncture resistance (EN ISO 12236), permittivity (EN ISO 11058), and mass per unit area (ISO 9864). Applications: road construction (separation layer), drainage (filtration), embankment reinforcement, landfill lining. CE marking under Construction Products Regulation (CPR 305/2011) is required for geotextiles placed on EU construction projects — manufacturers must issue DoP (Declaration of Performance) referencing harmonised standard EN 13249.
