PET stretch blow moulding vs HDPE extrusion blow moulding

PET stretch blow moulding (SBM) is the process used to produce the clear bottles found in water, CSD, juice, edible oil, and personal care packaging. A pre-made injection-moulded preform is reheated and simultaneously stretched axially (by a stretch rod) and blown into a mould with compressed air — this biaxial orientation gives PET bottles their clarity, strength, and carbonation retention. SBM machines are specified by number of cavities (1 to 20+ cavities per machine) and output per hour (typically 1,500–4,000 bottles per hour per cavity for standard sizes). Linear SBM machines (suitable for a wide range of bottle sizes and for smaller production runs) and rotary SBM machines (high-speed, best for single bottle size in high volume) are both available. HDPE extrusion blow moulding (EBM) produces bottles by extruding a hollow tube of molten HDPE (a parison), clamping a mould around it, and inflating the parison with air. EBM is used for HDPE shampoo bottles, household chemical bottles, jerricans (5–25L), fuel tanks, and industrial containers. EBM machines are characterised by the number of heads (parisons), shuttle or rotary design, and maximum container volume. For containers above approximately 5 litres, EBM is generally the preferred process. For PET containers up to approximately 5L, SBM is dominant.

Key machine specifications and buyer considerations

For PET stretch blow moulding machines: cavity count (more cavities = higher output but larger machine footprint and higher mould cost); preform neck finish compatibility (28mm PCO 1881 is the global standard for water and CSD; confirm neck standard before ordering preforms or machine); maximum bottle volume; heating oven capacity (more IR lamps = faster cycle); air recovery system (high-pressure blow air recovery can reduce energy consumption by 15–30%); and servo vs mechanical drive. For HDPE extrusion blow moulding machines: number of parisons/heads; parison wall thickness control (accumulator head vs continuous extrusion); clamping force; maximum bottle weight; and cycle time per shot. For both machine types, confirm: mould changeover time (relevant for operations running multiple bottle formats); control system capability and remote diagnostics; CE marking for EU buyers; availability of local technical support; and spare parts lead times for critical wear items (blow moulds, seals, heating elements).

Suitable resins and production setup guidance

PET stretch blow moulding requires bottle-grade PET resin with appropriate intrinsic viscosity (0.72–0.84 dl/g depending on application — see the PET resin guide). PET must be dried to below 50 ppm moisture before the preform injection moulding stage. For SBM machines purchasing preforms externally (rather than making them in-house), the preform quality — IV, colour, AA content, wall thickness distribution — is the primary quality control point. HDPE extrusion blow moulding uses HDPE grades with MFI of approximately 0.3–1.5 g/10 min (190°C/2.16kg) for bottles and jerricans. Lower MFI grades provide better parison melt strength for larger containers. For food-contact HDPE bottles, specify food-grade resin with appropriate Declaration of Compliance. When setting up a blow moulding production line, plan the facility layout to accommodate the bottle conveyor, leak testing equipment, labelling (sleeve labelling, OPP label), filling (if integrated), and packing stations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the output of a 2-cavity PET stretch blow moulding machine for 500ml water bottles?

A 2-cavity PET SBM machine for 500ml bottles typically produces approximately 3,000–6,000 bottles per hour (1,500–3,000 per cavity per hour) depending on machine speed, heating efficiency, and cycle time. A 4-cavity machine doubles this output. High-speed rotary SBM machines can achieve up to 2,000+ bottles per cavity per hour for optimised standard water bottle formats. Confirm the specified output at your exact bottle weight and neck finish with the machine supplier — output figures in brochures are often quoted at optimal conditions.

What is the difference between a 1-stage and 2-stage PET bottle blow moulding process?

In a 1-stage (injection stretch blow) process, the preform is injection moulded and immediately transferred to the blow moulding station in the same machine — no reheating step, faster process, good clarity, suited for small production runs and specialised bottles. In a 2-stage process, preforms are made separately (typically in high-cavity injection moulding machines) and then reheated and blown in a separate SBM machine — more efficient for high-volume production because preform making and bottle blowing can be independently optimised and run at different rates. Most large-scale bottle production uses 2-stage.

Can HDPE blow moulding machines produce food-grade containers?

Yes — HDPE is widely used for food-grade bottles (cooking oil, dairy, sauces, drinking water jerricans). The machine must be maintained to food hygiene standards (clean air lines, no lubricant contamination of product-contact surfaces) and the HDPE resin must be food-contact approved with a Declaration of Compliance. The mould must produce containers with no flash, sharp edges, or residual contamination. For containers in contact with beverages or sensitive food products, an additional leak test and contamination check before filling is standard practice.

Where are most PET blow moulding machines manufactured?

The leading PET SBM machine manufacturers are European — Sidel (France/Switzerland), Krones (Germany), SIPA (Italy), and KHS (Germany) dominate high-speed rotary machine production. Linear SBM machines are produced by European manufacturers and increasingly by competitive Chinese manufacturers. Chinese manufacturers include Aoki Technical Laboratory (Japanese design with Chinese production), Newamstar, and SMF — offering significantly lower entry prices for standard bottle formats. For HDPE EBM machines, Chinese manufacturers are competitive for standard bottle sizes and industrial container production.
