How multihead combination weighers work

A multihead combination weigher (also called a combination scale or multihead scale) achieves high-speed accurate weighing by simultaneously considering the individual weight of product in multiple weighing buckets and selecting the combination of buckets whose total is closest to the target weight. In a typical 14-head machine operating at 60 bags per minute, the computer evaluates thousands of possible bucket combinations per second, selects the closest combination, and simultaneously discharges those buckets through a central chute into the waiting bag below. The result is high fill accuracy (typically ±0.5–1g regardless of target weight) at high throughput. Multihead weighers are suitable for free-flowing solid products that can be spread and metered across the radial feeder trays: snacks (crisps, puffed snacks, popcorn), nuts and seeds (whole peanuts, almonds, cashews, mixed nuts), dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, mango pieces), fresh cut vegetables (broccoli florets, sliced beans, diced peppers), frozen vegetables, confectionery (hard candies, chocolate pieces, gummies), hardware parts (screws, bolts, clips), coffee beans (whole roasted). Multihead weighers are not suitable for fine powders, liquids, pastes, or very sticky products that would cling to and bridge the feeder surfaces. For sticky fresh produce or moist products, specialised radial feeder designs with reduced contact surfaces or anti-stick coatings are available.

Head count, integration with VFFS, and sourcing

Multihead weighers are classified by the number of weighing heads (buckets). More heads means faster speed and better combination accuracy. A 10-head machine suits lower-speed applications (20–40 bags per minute). A 14-head machine is the most common configuration for medium-speed snack and food packing (40–80 bags per minute). An 18-head machine suits higher-speed applications. A 32-head or higher-head-count machine is used for very high-speed production (100+ bags per minute) or very small target weights where many combinations are needed to achieve accuracy. Almost all multihead weighers are used in combination with a VFFS (vertical form-fill-seal) bag-making machine below, which forms the bag from roll-stock film, receives the weighed product discharge, and seals and cuts the bag. The multihead weigher mounts above the VFFS machine on a frame. The two machines must be matched for speed, bag size, and discharge timing. Sanitary wash-down designs for fresh, wet, and frozen product applications use stainless steel construction throughout, sealed electronics, IP65 or IP69K rated components, and smooth hygienic surfaces for CIP cleaning. Ishida (Japan), Yamato (Japan), and various Chinese manufacturers (including Heat and Control, Kenwei, and Multiweigh) supply multihead weighers globally. Chinese manufacturers offer competitive pricing on standard configurations. When sourcing, specify: product name and characteristics, target weight, bag size, required speed, and integration with specific VFFS machine models.

Frequently asked questions

Can a multihead weigher handle sticky or moist products?

Standard multihead weighers are not well-suited to very sticky or high-moisture products because product clings to and bridges the feeder surfaces, causing weighing errors and machine stoppages. For sticky products (fresh-cut herbs, moist protein snacks, gummy confectionery), specialist designs with smooth non-stick coatings (PTFE), reduced-surface radial feeders, and frequent wash-down capability are available. Frozen products (frozen peas, frozen mixed vegetables) can run successfully on standard or wash-down multihead weighers if they remain sufficiently separated.

What is the typical accuracy of a multihead weigher?

A well-maintained multihead combination weigher with a suitable product typically achieves ±0.5–1g absolute accuracy regardless of the target fill weight. For a 100g bag, this is ±0.5–1% accuracy. For a 500g bag, this is ±0.1–0.2% — significantly better than auger or cup volumetric fillers which maintain percentage accuracy. Pre-packaged food sold by weight must comply with average weight regulations (EU Directive 76/211, NIST Handbook 133 for the US): the average weight of packs in a batch must equal or exceed the stated quantity, with a defined allowable percentage of underweight packs.

How does a multihead weigher integrate with a VFFS machine?

The multihead weigher sits above the VFFS machine on a mounting frame. The VFFS machine signals to the multihead weigher when a new bag is ready to receive product. The weigher calculates the best combination of buckets, discharges them simultaneously through the central timing gate and chute, and the product falls into the open bag below. The VFFS machine then seals the bag and advances the film to form the next bag. Speed is limited by the discharge timing — the bag must be fully open and correctly positioned before the weigher discharges. The two machines must be configured together for synchronisation.
