LED binning, colour consistency, and CE/FCC compliance
LED colour and brightness consistency is critical for applications requiring uniform appearance across multiple units (LED signage, backlighting, architectural lighting). LED binning is the process of sorting LEDs into bins based on measured forward voltage (Vf), luminous intensity, and dominant wavelength — ensuring that units from the same bin are visually and electrically consistent. ANSI/NEMA bin nomenclature (e.g. 5700K, 80 CRI) is used for white LEDs in lighting applications; Munsell colour system bins are used for coloured LEDs. Major Chinese LED chip manufacturers (Sanan Optoelectronics, Epitop, HC Semitek) produce LED chips in standardised bins; LED module assembly manufacturers (many in Shenzhen's Baoan and Nanshan districts) purchase binned chips and assemble modules to specification. For wholesale buyers procuring LED strips and modules for retail or architectural use, always specify the required bin code range (e.g. CCT within ±200K, CRI ≥80) in the purchase specification. For CE and FCC compliance of LED modules and drivers: LED luminaires (complete lighting fittings) require CE marking under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and EMC Directive, plus the Ecodesign Regulation for energy performance. LED strip lights without integrated driver are typically not independently CE-marked but must be used with a CE-marked driver. FCC Part 15 applies to LED products generating RF emissions in the US market.
