Power supply types and key specifications

Safety approvals: UL 62368, IEC 60601, and efficiency standards
Power supply safety certification is mandatory for most end-product certifications. UL 62368-1 (Audio/Video, Information and Communication Technology Equipment safety standard) is the US standard for general ICT and AV power supplies, replacing UL 60950-1. IEC 62368-1 is the international equivalent, recognised in EU (as EN 62368-1), UK, Japan, Korea, and most global markets. For medical applications, IEC 60601-1 (Medical Electrical Equipment — Part 1: General requirements for basic safety and essential performance) is the mandatory standard — with additional requirements for leakage current (2× MOPP — Means of Patient Protection — for patient-applied equipment), reinforced insulation, and EMC per IEC 60601-1-2. CE marking for power supplies requires compliance with the Low Voltage Directive (LVD), EMC Directive, and ErP Directive (for energy efficiency). Energy efficiency standards: EU Regulation No. 278/2009 (EuP Lot 6) specifies minimum efficiency requirements for external power supplies; the US DoE Level VI standard applies to externally connected power supplies; these require average efficiency ≥87% at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% load points for ≥49W adapters.
