HDPE bottle grades, applications, and specifications

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) bottles are produced by extrusion blow moulding — where a tube of molten HDPE (parison) is extruded and then inflated inside a split mould to form the bottle shape. HDPE offers excellent chemical resistance, good ESCR (environmental stress crack resistance), low moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR), and is food-grade compliant in the appropriate resin grades. Common HDPE bottle applications are edible oil and cooking-oil (1L–5L), household cleaning products (detergents, bleach, disinfectants), personal care (shampoo, conditioner, body wash), industrial chemicals (where UN certification is required for hazardous goods), and milk and dairy (in markets using HDPE for single-use dairy packaging). HDPE bottles are typically white (natural HDPE), black, or custom colours — with pigments added to the HDPE melt during blow moulding. Unlike clear PET bottles, HDPE does not offer clarity (it is translucent to opaque) — where product visibility is required, PET or clear PP is a better choice. For food applications, HDPE resin must be food-contact approved and the manufacturer must provide a Declaration of Compliance under EU Regulation 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR. The HDPE raw material specification (melt flow index, density grade) affects bottle performance — request the specific resin grade from the supplier and cross-reference against the HDPE pipe-grade and film-grade sourcing guides if you need to understand material supply chain.

HDPE jerry can and UN-rated bottle applications

HDPE is the standard material for plastic jerry cans and containers in the 2L–25L range — used for edible oils, cooking oil, industrial chemicals, and lubricants. For food and edible-oil jerry cans, food-grade HDPE with FDA or EU 10/2011 DoC is required. For hazardous goods transport, UN performance certification is mandatory — the jerry can must display a UN mark indicating the packaging code, performance grade (X, Y, or Z), maximum gross mass or density, and year of manufacture. Common UN marks for HDPE jerry cans are UN 3H1/Y (inner packaging) and UN 3H2 (larger containers). For cooking-oil buyers who require jerry cans, see the dedicated plastic jerry can suppliers page, and for cooking-oil-specific container formats including IBCs and drums, see the cooking-oil packaging suppliers page. HDPE bottle and jerry can dimensions should be specified with the manufacturer in millimetres: total height, maximum diameter, neck diameter, and handle profile if applicable.

Frequently asked questions

Can HDPE bottles be used for food products?

Yes — food-grade HDPE is widely approved for food contact globally. The resin must comply with EU Regulation 10/2011 (for EU market) or FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 (for US market) and the manufacturer must provide a Declaration of Compliance. Not all HDPE resin is food-grade — industrial-grade HDPE used for pipes, geomembranes, or recycled content may not meet the required migration limits. Always specify food-grade HDPE and request the DoC before ordering bottles for food applications.

What is ESCR and why does it matter for HDPE bottles?

ESCR (environmental stress crack resistance) is the resistance of HDPE to cracking when in contact with certain surfactants, detergents, or other chemicals that can initiate stress cracking below the normally expected mechanical failure stress. For HDPE bottles used for household cleaning products, detergents, or personal care products, ESCR is a critical specification — failure to specify adequate ESCR can result in bottles cracking or leaking in storage or transit when in contact with the product. High ESCR grades of HDPE (typically medium-density or bimodal HDPE) are specified for detergent and chemical bottle applications. Request ESCR test data from the bottle supplier for your specific product.

What is the typical MOQ for HDPE bottles from Chinese manufacturers?

For standard HDPE bottle shapes already in the manufacturer's mould library, MOQs are typically 3,000–10,000 units per size and colour with 2–4 week lead time. Custom shapes requiring new extrusion blow mould tooling cost typically $1,500–6,000 per mould, with minimum production commitments of 10,000–50,000 units per year to justify tooling. Natural (unpigmented) HDPE is lower MOQ than custom colours. For jerry cans and larger containers, MOQs can be lower per unit due to higher unit value but may be specified in terms of container loads rather than individual piece counts.
