Intrinsic viscosity — the key specification for bottle-grade PET
Intrinsic viscosity (IV), measured in dl/g, is the most important specification for bottle-grade PET resin. IV reflects the molecular weight and chain length of the polymer — higher IV means higher molecular weight, greater melt strength, and better mechanical performance in the finished bottle. The standard IV range for PET bottle resin is 0.72–0.86 dl/g. Water and still beverage bottles (single-use, lower pressure resistance required): 0.72–0.78 dl/g. Carbonated soft drinks (CSD) bottles (must withstand internal CO2 pressure): 0.78–0.84 dl/g. Hot-fill bottles (must resist distortion at filling temperatures): 0.80–0.86 dl/g. Large bottles (5L and above): higher IV (0.80–0.86 dl/g) for adequate melt strength during blow moulding. Specifying the wrong IV for your preform and blow moulding process results in inconsistent wall thickness distribution, haze, and bottle failure. Always confirm the IV specification with your preform toolmaker and blow moulding machine supplier.
Colour, brightness, and additives in bottle PET
PET bottle resin quality is also assessed by colour (expressed as L*, a*, b* in the CIELAB colour space) and brightness. For clear beverage bottles, very low b* (yellowness) values are required — typically b* below 2.0 for premium water bottles; up to 3.5 for standard grades. Haze and clarity depend on the SSP (solid state polycondensation) process quality. Standard bottle-grade PET contains acetaldehyde (AA) scavengers, since acetaldehyde is generated during melt processing and adversely affects the taste of water and sensitive beverages at levels above 10 ppb. For water packaging, specify a low-AA grade or an AA-scavenger-containing grade and request the AA content specification. Antimony-based (Sb2O3) catalysts are standard; antimony-free PET (using titanium or germanium catalysts) is available and required for certain market preferences and food contact regulations.
Food-grade certifications and documentation
Virgin PET bottle-grade resin for food and beverage packaging must comply with food contact material regulations in the destination market. EU buyers: confirm compliance with EU Regulation (EC) 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended for food contact — the supplier must provide a Declaration of Compliance (DoC) with supporting migration test data. UK buyers: equivalent UK food contact materials regulations apply. US buyers: FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 (PET for food use) compliance. Additionally, request: CoA confirming IV, colour (L*, a*, b*), and AA content; ISO 9001 facility certificate; and a food-grade certificate of analysis from the producer. For halal-certified food or pharmaceutical packaging, request halal status confirmation. PET resin for pharmaceutical primary packaging (bottles for solid oral dose forms, liquid medicines) may require additional extractable and leachable (E&L) studies — consult with your regulatory team.

What is the typical MOQ for a wholesale PET bottle-grade resin order?
Most PET resin is traded in container loads. A 20ft container holds approximately 20–24 metric tonnes of PET resin in 25kg bags. Most producers and major trading companies require one FCL as minimum order. Some trading companies supply smaller quantities (1–5 tonnes) at a higher price per tonne, which suits preform manufacturers scaling up or testing new grades. Big-bag (FIBC) packaging is also available and often preferred for automated handling at preform facilities.
Where is most bottle-grade PET resin produced?
The major PET bottle resin producing regions are China (largest volume exporter globally — major producers include Jiangsu Sanfangxiang, Wankai New Materials, Yizheng Chemical Fibre), South and Southeast Asia (India, Indonesia), the Middle East, and Europe (Indorama Ventures, which operates globally including in Europe). Middle Eastern and Asian producers are highly competitive for export to Africa and South and Southeast Asia. European producers (Indorama, DAK Americas) serve regional buyers with shorter lead times and competitive logistics.
Can I use the same PET resin for both water bottles and carbonated drink bottles?
Not always. Still water bottles require lower IV (0.72–0.78 dl/g) and prioritise clarity and low AA content. CSD bottles require higher IV (0.78–0.84 dl/g) for the pressure resistance needed with carbonation. Using a water-grade resin for CSD applications risks bottle creep and burst failure under internal pressure. Using a CSD-grade resin for water bottles typically works but costs more without benefit. Specify the IV range for your specific application and confirm with your preform and bottle design toolmaker.
What documentation should I request before importing PET resin?
Request: CoA confirming IV, colour (L*, a*, b*), AA content, moisture content (below 50 ppm before processing — PET must be dried before moulding); Declaration of Compliance for food contact; REACH compliance declaration; ISO 9001 certificate; Certificate of Origin; and a pre-shipment inspection certificate (SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek) for large orders from new suppliers.
