Polyethylene (PE) — HDPE (high density, blow moulding, pipes, caps), LDPE (low density, films, coatings), LLDPE (linear low density, stretch films, pouches). Polypropylene (PP) — homopolymer (rigid, fibres), random copolymer (transparent, food contact), impact copolymer (automotive, appliance). PVC — suspension grade (rigid profiles, pipes), emulsion grade (plastisols, coatings). PET — bottle grade (IV 0.72–0.85 dL/g for carbonated/still water, 0.60–0.72 for hot-fill), fibre grade, film grade. PS — GPPS (general purpose, clear) and HIPS (high impact, white). Key certifications: FDA 21 CFR and EU Reg. 10/2011 for food contact grades; NSF 61 for PE/PP in potable water pipes.

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) — general purpose, high heat, plating grades; UL94 V-0 flame-retardant grades. PC (polycarbonate) — optical clarity, general purpose, glass-filled; Makrolon (Covestro), Lexan (SABIC IP), Calibre (Trinseo). PA6 and PA66 (polyamide/nylon) — unfilled and glass/mineral-filled for automotive, electrical connectors; UL94 V-2/V-0 grades. POM (polyoxymethylene/acetal) — Delrin (DuPont), Celcon, Hostaform; precision parts, gears, bearings. PEEK (polyether ether ketone) — Victrex 450G, KetaSpire (Solvay); continuous use to 260°C; used in aerospace, medical implants, semiconductor. LCP (liquid crystal polymer) — Xydar, Vectra; extreme heat resistance, low warpage for SMT electronic connectors.

Polymers themselves are exempted from REACH registration (substance in article), but the additives (plasticisers, stabilisers, flame retardants, pigments) mixed into compound formulations are subject to REACH. Key SVHC risks in polymer compounds: phthalate plasticisers in PVC (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DIBP — all SVHC and restricted in consumer articles); lead-based heat stabilisers (replaced in EU by Ca-Zn, organic tin-free systems); halogenated flame retardants (some SVHC — HBCD, DecaBDE restricted). Buyers should require full ingredient REACH compliance including an eSDS listing all SVHC content above 0.1% w/w per article.

Global demand for sustainable polymers is growing rapidly. Mechanically recycled grades: GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified rPET (bottle-grade, pellets for fibre and thermoforming), rHDPE (blown film, injection moulding), rPP; typically 5–25% price premium over virgin. Chemically recycled grades: Pyrolysis oil from mixed polyolefin waste → certified circular PE/PP (SABIC TRUCIRCLE, Borealis EverMinds, LyondellBasell MoReTec); Book-and-Claim mass balance approach certified by ISCC+ or REDcert². For EU packaging, the Single-Use Plastics Directive and Packaging Regulation mandate minimum recycled content (30% by 2030 for PET bottles in EU). Request ISCC+ certificates for chain of custody verification.
