Pouch filling machine types and product compatibility

Pouch packing machines fill and seal flexible pouches with liquid, semi-liquid, powder, or granule products. Two fundamentally different machine types are used depending on whether the pouches are premade or formed on the machine. Premade pouch filling machines (also called premade bag filling machines or pouch fillers) accept premade printed pouches (stand-up pouches, flat pouches, gusset pouches) from a pouch magazine, open the pouch, fill it with product, and seal the top — the premade pouch can carry high-quality graphics from a flexible packaging converter, giving excellent shelf presence. Premade pouch fillers are the standard for premium food brands using stand-up pouches, flat bottom pouches, and spouted pouches. Spouted pouch filling machines specifically handle pouches with a pre-fitted resealable spout — filling through the spout and applying a cap, or filling from the top before the spout is fitted. Used for cooking oil, beverage, baby food, and liquid detergent pouches. Vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machines form the pouch from a roll of film on the machine — the film is formed around a vertical tube, sealed at the bottom, filled from above, and heat-sealed at the top to create pillow bags, gusset bags, or four-side-seal pouches. VFFS is the standard for high-volume snack, powder, and granule packaging (chips, crisps, coffee, spices, pet food, sugar, salt, frozen vegetables). VFFS produces pillow bags — the standard bag format for most retail snack and dry food packaging. For high-barrier applications (oxygen-sensitive food), the film roll on a VFFS machine can be barrier laminate (foil, metallised, EVOH) — the same packaging performance as a premade pouch at lower per-unit packaging cost at high volume.
