Organic cooking oil certification: standards, supply chain, and grade overview

Organic cooking oils are produced from organically certified oilseeds or fruit grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilisers — and processed in certified organic handling facilities without the use of chemical solvents (hexane) for extraction. The two dominant organic certification frameworks for international trade are EU Organic Regulation 2018/848 (replacing 834/2007) and the US National Organic Program (USDA NOP). **EU Organic Regulation 2018/848:** Covers production, processing, and labelling of organic products marketed in the EU. Third-country (non-EU) imports must comply with EU standards and be certified by an EU-approved control body. The EU organic logo (green leaf) requires a minimum 95% organic ingredient content. Allowed processing aids for organic oil production: mechanical pressing, centrifugation, filtration — hexane solvent extraction is prohibited. This is why cold-pressed or expeller-pressed production methods are standard for certified organic oils. **USDA NOP (National Organic Program):** The US equivalent framework — organic products marketed in the US must be certified under NOP standards. The US and EU have an equivalency arrangement for most organic products, meaning EU-certified organic oils can be marketed in the US under the USDA organic seal (with some procedural requirements), and vice versa. **Common organic cooking oil types available in bulk:** **Organic sunflower oil (refined):** EU and Ukrainian origin organic sunflower available from certified processors. Refined using physical refining (no hexane) — neutral flavour suitable for food manufacturing. **Organic coconut oil (virgin or refined):** Philippine and Sri Lankan origin certified organic virgin and RBD coconut oil — one of the most commercially established organic cooking oil categories. **Organic rapeseed oil (cold-pressed or refined):** UK and German cold-pressed organic rapeseed is a growing retail category. EU organic refined rapeseed also available from certified EU processors. **Organic extra virgin olive oil:** Spanish, Italian, Greek, and Tunisian certified organic EVOO — widely available at premium over non-organic EVOO. **Organic sesame oil:** Indian and African origin certified organic sesame oil (cold-pressed and roasted). **Organic palm oil (RSPO + Organic):** Limited supply — requires both organic certification and RSPO certification for highest standards. Indonesian and Malaysian certified organic palm available at significant premium. **Key supply chain requirement:** The entire supply chain from oilseed farm through processing to the buyer must be certified and audited annually by an approved control body (AB/certifier). An organic transaction certificate (TC) must accompany each shipment.
