A horizontal paddle mixer consists of a U-shaped (or W-shaped for large batch units) trough housing one or two counter-rotating shafts with paddles arranged at angles. The paddles move product from the ends toward the centre (outer paddles) and from the centre outward (inner paddles), creating a three-dimensional folding action. Paddle mixers are gentler than ribbon blenders and are preferred when product fragility is a concern — the open paddle geometry produces lower shear than close-clearance ribbon blenders. Key applications include: blended salted snacks and breakfast cereals (where coated or puffed products must not be broken); muesli and cereal bar mix blending; potato and vegetable chips seasoning blending; compound animal feed pelleting preparation; bread crumb and stuffing mix blending; and bakery premix preparation.
