Ground coffee production requires grinding roasted coffee beans to a particle size matched to the intended brewing method: coarse (French press, percolator), medium-coarse (pour-over, AeroPress), medium (drip filter), medium-fine (espresso pod), fine (espresso), and very fine (Turkish coffee). Industrial coffee grinders for packaged retail pre-ground coffee use high-capacity roller mills or flat disc burr grinders that maintain consistent particle size distribution across high-volume continuous grinding. Key equipment types include: roller mills (pairs of corrugated metal rollers that crush and shear the coffee beans — multiple roller stages achieve coarser-to-finer grind progression; consistent particle size distribution; used in high-volume commercial grinding); flat disc grinders (two flat steel burrs that shear the coffee between them — wider range of grind sizes achievable); and impact mills (used for coarse pre-breaking of whole beans before the primary grinder). For instant coffee production, coffee is ground, then extracted with hot water, and the liquid extract is spray-dried or freeze-dried — the grind size for extraction is different from grind size for direct brewing.
