Cardboard tubes (also called paper tubes, composite cans, or kraft tubes depending on the application) are cylindrical packaging structures produced by winding paperboard in a spiral or convolute (parallel-wound) pattern. Spiral-wound tubes are the most common format for consumer packaging — the paper is wound at an angle in a continuous process, producing a strong helical structure. The winding lines (a diagonal seam pattern) are visible on plain tubes but can be obscured by a full-coverage outer label or wrap. Spiral-wound tubes are used for the full range of consumer packaging applications including cosmetics, tea, coffee, snack chips, pringles-style crisps, spices, and powdered products. Convolute (straight-wound) tubes are wound with the paper parallel to the tube axis — producing a tube with no visible winding lines on cut ends. Less common in consumer packaging, convolute tubes are used for industrial cores and some premium applications. Wall construction is critical for structural performance and food contact compliance: the inner liner must be food contact compliant for applications where the food contacts the inner tube surface; the body plies provide the structural wall strength; the outer wrap carries the printed label or design. Key parameters for tube specification are: inner diameter (ID), outer diameter (OD), length, wall thickness, inner liner specification (food grade, foil-lined, PE-lined, or plain), outer label specification (printed paper, foil, or plain kraft), end closures (plastic lids, metal ends, push-fit plugs, peel-off foil membranes, or custom injection-moulded caps).
