A capping machine applies and seals the cap or closure onto a filled bottle or jar on the packaging line — one of the most critical operations in the bottling process, as inadequate capping leads to leakage, contamination, and lost product. The capping technology must match the closure type specified for the bottle. Screw cappers (rotary or inline) apply threaded screw caps to threaded bottle necks — by rotating the cap to a specified torque. For most PET and HDPE bottles with standard screw caps, a rotary or inline screw capper is the standard machine type. Torque specification is critical — under-torque allows caps to come loose in transit; over-torque can strip threads or make caps difficult for consumers to open. Most modern screw cappers apply a programmable torque target. Snap cappers apply snap-fit push-on caps (disc-top, sport-cap, and snap-on lids) to bottles and tubes — using vertical cam or pressure-pad mechanisms to seat the cap. ROPP (Roll-On Pilfer-Proof) cappers are used for aluminium ROPP closures on glass and aluminium bottles — the blank aluminium cap is applied over the bottle neck and the cap is spun (rolled) onto the neck threading using hardened steel rollers, forming the thread in the cap. ROPP is the standard closure for spirits, wine, and premium water/beverage glass bottles. Chuck cappers (torque cappers) grip the cap in a chuck and apply it with a controlled torque — used for wide-mouth jars and non-standard cap formats where a standard rotary head does not engage correctly. Press-on cappers (T-closure sealers) apply twist-off T-closures to glass jars and sauce bottles using a press-on mechanism.
