Plastic jerry can specifications: materials, grades, and capacities

Plastic jerry cans are blow-moulded from HDPE or PP and are the dominant bulk liquid container in the 2L–25L range for edible oils, cooking oil, industrial chemicals, lubricants, and agricultural chemicals. HDPE is the most widely used material for jerry cans — offering good chemical resistance, excellent ESCR (environmental stress crack resistance), and food-grade compliance in appropriate resin grades. Natural (translucent) HDPE allows level checking without opening; opaque white or yellow HDPE is commonly used for cooking oil and food products. The most commercially important sizes for edible-oil and cooking-oil applications are 5L, 10L, and 20L — matching retail and food service channel conventions in most markets. Smaller jerry cans (1L–2L) are used for premium edible oils, automotive fluids, and personal care products. The jerry can body can be produced with one or two handles (top handle and side handle), a recessed grip, and various label panel sizes depending on the application. For food-grade applications, the HDPE resin must comply with EU Regulation 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR and the manufacturer must provide a Declaration of Compliance (DoC). For hazardous goods transport — including certain industrial chemicals — UN performance certification (UN 3H2 for HDPE jerry cans) is mandatory. UN-certified jerry cans must display the UN mark indicating performance grade, maximum gross mass, year of manufacture, and manufacturing country.
