Oilseed press machines are the primary mechanical equipment used to extract oil from oilseeds by pressure. Three main press types are used commercially, each with distinct operating characteristics, application ranges, and oil quality outcomes: **Screw expeller press (hot press / standard expeller):** The dominant oilseed pressing technology globally. A rotating screw (worm shaft) inside a ribbed barrel cage compresses the oilseed progressively from feed end to discharge end. The friction and compression generate heat (80–130°C in the pressing zone), which helps break down cell walls and improve oil extraction efficiency. Standard screw expellers achieve 85–92% oil extraction efficiency from well-conditioned seeds. The pressed cake (expeller cake or oilseed cake) is discharged continuously and can be used as protein-rich animal feed. Capacities range from 50 kg/hour (cottage-scale) to 20+ tonnes/day for large expellers. The heat generated means the resulting oil is 'hot-pressed' — standard practice for most edible oil commodity production. **Cold-press expeller:** A modified screw expeller designed to minimise oil temperature during pressing — typically below 40–50°C. Achieved by: lower compression ratio in the screw design, lower screw speed, water-cooled barrel, and/or shorter press residence time. The lower temperature preserves heat-sensitive nutritional compounds (polyphenols, vitamin E, natural flavours) and produces a premium cold-pressed oil. Trade-off: lower oil yield (more oil remains in the press cake) and lower throughput capacity than hot-press expellers. Used for: cold-pressed rapeseed oil, cold-pressed sunflower oil, cold-pressed flaxseed oil, virgin olive oil (though olive uses different press technology traditionally), and other premium artisan and organic oil production. **Hydraulic press:** A traditional batch pressing technology — oil seed material (wrapped in press cloths or placed in metal cages) is compressed under hydraulic pressure. Lower throughput than screw presses; more manual labour intensive; typically used for small-scale artisan production, specialty seed pressing (argan oil, hemp seed oil, black seed oil), and applications where the press cake integrity is important for a secondary product (e.g., almond flour from cold-pressed almond oil). Capacities are low (10–200 kg per batch). Hydraulic press-expressed oils are often positioned as traditional, artisan, and premium.
