An IBC tote (Intermediate Bulk Container) is a reusable bulk liquid packaging unit — the standard format for transporting and storing liquids in volumes of 275–330 US gallons (approximately 1,000–1,250 litres). The dominant format globally is the composite IBC: a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) inner bottle blow-moulded to the container shape, housed within a galvanised steel wire-mesh outer cage, and mounted on a steel or plastic pallet base. The HDPE inner bottle provides chemical resistance and food contact compliance (for food-grade IBCs); the steel cage provides structural support and enables forklift handling and stacking. Key specification parameters for IBCs are: inner bottle capacity (standard 1,000 litre / 275 gallon); inner bottle HDPE grade — food-grade HDPE for food, beverage, and edible oil applications must be produced from a virgin HDPE resin that complies with food contact regulations (EU Regulation 10/2011, FDA 21 CFR for US market); the inner bottle must be clean and free of any chemical residue or odour for food-grade use. Valve and outlet specification: standard IBCs are fitted with a 2-inch (DN50) butterfly or ball valve at the base for product discharge. For edible oil and food applications, stainless steel valves or food-grade HDPE valves are specified to avoid flavour contamination from metal contact. Cage construction: standard is hot-dip galvanised steel wire; stainless steel cage IBCs are available for pharmaceutical and ultra-clean food applications. Pallet base: standard is a welded steel tube pallet; plastic pallet base IBCs are available where metal contact contamination must be avoided.
