Polymers themselves are exempted from REACH registration (substance in article), but the additives (plasticisers, stabilisers, flame retardants, pigments) mixed into compound formulations are subject to REACH. Key SVHC risks in polymer compounds: phthalate plasticisers in PVC (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DIBP — all SVHC and restricted in consumer articles); lead-based heat stabilisers (replaced in EU by Ca-Zn, organic tin-free systems); halogenated flame retardants (some SVHC — HBCD, DecaBDE restricted). Buyers should require full ingredient REACH compliance including an eSDS listing all SVHC content above 0.1% w/w per article.

Global demand for sustainable polymers is growing rapidly. Mechanically recycled grades: GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified rPET (bottle-grade, pellets for fibre and thermoforming), rHDPE (blown film, injection moulding), rPP; typically 5–25% price premium over virgin. Chemically recycled grades: Pyrolysis oil from mixed polyolefin waste → certified circular PE/PP (SABIC TRUCIRCLE, Borealis EverMinds, LyondellBasell MoReTec); Book-and-Claim mass balance approach certified by ISCC+ or REDcert². For EU packaging, the Single-Use Plastics Directive and Packaging Regulation mandate minimum recycled content (30% by 2030 for PET bottles in EU). Request ISCC+ certificates for chain of custody verification.
