Spain is the world's largest producer of olive oil, accounting for approximately 40–50% of global production in an average year. The producing heartland is Andalucía, which generates approximately 75% of Spain's total olive oil production — concentrated in the provinces of Jaén (the single largest olive oil producing province in the world), Córdoba, Seville, Granada, and Málaga. Key Spanish olive oil DOP (Denominación de Origen Protegida) designations include: Priego de Córdoba, Baena, Sierra de Cazorla, Sierra Mágina, Estepa, Sierra de Segura, and Les Garrigues (Catalonia), among others. At the commodity level, Spain exports large volumes of bulk olive oil (non-DOP refined and pomace grades) and standard extra virgin olive oil, primarily through the ports of Algeciras, Málaga, Tarragona, and Barcelona. The major Spanish olive oil exporters are: Deoleo (owner of Bertolli, Carapelli, and other brands — the world's largest olive oil company by volume), Sovena Iberia, and Aceites del Sur-Coosur. Spain is also the EU's second-largest sunflower oil producer (after France), with significant cultivation in Castile-La Mancha, Extremadura, and Andalucía. Hojiblanca cooperative and regional cooperatives are important olive oil sources alongside the multinationals.
Buying olive oil wholesale from Spain: grades, quality, and documentation
When sourcing olive oil wholesale from Spain, understanding grade hierarchy is essential: Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) has free acidity ≤0.8% and no sensory defects (verified by organoleptic panel assessment per IOC/EU Reg. 2568/91 and its amendments); Virgin Olive Oil has free acidity ≤2.0% with minor sensory defects allowed; Refined Olive Oil is chemically refined from lampante virgin, with acidity ≤0.3%; Pure Olive Oil (Olive Oil) is a blend of refined and virgin, acidity ≤1.0%; Olive Pomace Oil is refined from the olive cake residue. For bulk international buyers, standard commodity EVOO and refined olive oil are the primary grades. Spanish EVOO is typically traded FOB Algeciras/Málaga/Tarragona in ISO tanks (18–21 tonnes per 20ft tank) or flexitanks. Documentation required for export to non-EU markets: EUR.1 certificate of origin (or REX/GSP), Certificate of Analysis including chemistry parameters and organoleptic assessment, Health Certificate, Certificate of Conformity with destination country standards, and Phytosanitary Certificate if required. The International Olive Council (IOC, headquartered in Madrid) publishes the international trade standards for olive oil.
