Meal portioning machines accurately portion solid food components (cooked rice, pasta, potato, vegetable pieces, meat portions) into meal trays. The main portioning technologies include: linear weighers (a single belt or vibratory feed system deposits product onto a weigher and delivers a target weight — suitable for larger portion sizes and products that cannot be multi-head weighed); multi-head weighers (multiple independent weigher heads are loaded simultaneously; the computer selects the combination of head weights closest to the target weight — extremely accurate and fast for small to medium piece-size products like vegetables, pasta, or diced potato; commonly 10–14 heads, producing portions within ±1–3g of the target); and volumetric portioners (a defined volume of product is dispensed per portion — less accurate by weight but suitable for consistent-density products). For solid protein components (meat portions, fish fillets), individual piece weighing and manual or robotic placement into the meal tray is typical, as pieces are too irregular for automated volumetric or multi-head portioning.
Frequently asked questions
When is a multi-head weigher the right choice for meal portioning?
A multi-head weigher (or combination weigher) is the right choice when: the product is free-flowing enough to be metered through vibratory feeders into weigher buckets (wet sauce-coated products may not flow freely); the portion size is not excessively large (multi-head weighers are most efficient for portions up to 500–800g — larger portions require fewer heads and more weigher capacity); high throughput is needed (multi-head weighers can achieve 50–100+ portions per minute for small portions); and portion weight accuracy is important for declared weight compliance. They are not suitable for very sticky or wet products that clog the weigher buckets, or for products with very large individual piece sizes that cannot be accommodated in the weigher buckets.
What weight accuracy is required for retail-packed meal components?
Retail-packed food products must comply with the average weight legislation for the declared net content. In the EU, the Average Weight Regulation (EC 2021/1296 and predecessor Directive 76/211/EEC) requires that the average of a batch of packs equals or exceeds the declared weight, with limits on the proportion of individual packs that fall below specified tolerances. In the UK and many other markets, similar legislation applies. For a declared portion weight of 150g, the permitted shortfall tolerance is approximately 4.5g (3% of declared quantity below 100g declared weight). The portioning machine must be capable of achieving the required average weight accuracy consistently. A checkweigher downstream of the portioner rejects under-weight packs and provides statistical data on portioning accuracy.
