Fruit and produce washing machinery is available in several configurations suited to different product types. Bubble washers (also called flotation or soaker washers) submerge the product in a water tank where air injection creates turbulent bubbles that dislodge surface soil and debris. They are gentle and suitable for delicate soft fruits (berries, tomatoes, grapes, stone fruit). Brush washing machines use rotating soft brushes to scrub firm-skinned produce (citrus, potatoes, apples, pears) while conveying it through a water spray. They are effective for produce with irregular or rough surfaces where bubbling alone does not remove embedded soil. Spray washers deliver high-pressure water sprays over the product on a mesh conveyor belt and are used as a final rinse stage or for less contaminated produce. High-pressure spray systems can cause bruising on soft products and should not be used on delicate fruit. For root vegetables with heavy soil loading (potatoes, carrots, beets), a drum or barrel washer with internal paddle lifters is more appropriate than a bubble washer.

Before requesting a quotation, specify: (1) fruit or vegetable type — the physical fragility, size, surface texture, and soil load of the product determine the appropriate washer type; (2) required processing capacity in tonnes per hour of fresh product; (3) whether the product is to be washed before cutting, before juice extraction, before freezing, or before fresh-pack; (4) water quality and temperature requirements; (5) whether sanitising wash (with food-approved acid or chlorine solution within regulatory limits) is required; (6) water recirculation — whether wash water is recirculated (with filtration and top-up) or run-to-drain; (7) downstream equipment — what comes immediately after washing (conveyor, sizer, cutter, inspector); (8) available utilities (water supply, drainage, electrical supply); (9) cleaning requirements for the washer itself. Do not accept claims regarding pathogen reduction without understanding the approved chemical, concentration, contact time, and temperature used — buyers are responsible for validating their own washing process through HACCP assessment.
