Crude palm oil (CPO) is extracted directly from the mesocarp (fleshy outer layer) of fresh oil palm fruit bunches (FFB) by mills located at or near the palm plantations. The extraction process — sterilisation of fresh fruit bunches, stripping, digestion, pressing, and clarification — produces an orange-red crude oil containing free fatty acids, moisture, impurities, carotenoids, and tocotrienols. CPO is not food-grade as extracted — it is an industrial raw material that requires further refining before use in food applications. **Who buys CPO?** **Edible oil refineries** are the dominant buyers of CPO globally. The refinery purchases CPO from mills (or from trading houses who aggregate mill supply), refines it to RBD Palm Olein, RBD Palm Stearin, and other fractions, and sells the refined products to food manufacturers, distributors, and retailers.
